During regular check-ups, we take x-rays, do a cleaning, and apply fluoride varnish to the teeth. The x-rays show us if there are any cavities starting to form between the teeth, where we can’t see just by looking. And when we do the cleaning, we will point out areas of the teeth that are being brushed well, as well as areas that can be improved. Fluoride acts like vitamins for the teeth, to keep them healthy and strong.
If we do find decay, we will recommend treatment options, including:
– white (composite) or silver (amalgam) fillings
– white (zirconia) or silver (stainless steel) crowns
Alternative options for children who are unable to sit for regular fillings
Yes! Amalgam fillings have been used for over 100 years in millions of patients, and they are safe.
The American Dental Association confirms that amalgam fillings are often the best choice, especially for large fillings, or for situations in which the tooth can’t stay dry.
If a composite (white) filling gets wet while it’s being placed, it doesn’t last as long. It can fall out altogether, or the tooth can get another cavity underneath the filling.
Even a perfect filling can get a cavity underneath if the tooth isn’t taken care of! It’s important to brush your teeth twice a day, floss once a day, and not have sugar or acid too often!
Fun fact: if an amalgam filling gets dislodged and swallowed, it will pass through your digestive tract without being absorbed!
