In addition to being used to chew, baby teeth play the important role of guiding the adult teeth into their proper places. If a child loses a baby tooth early, that can cause the permanent teeth to shift, and that can lead to dental problems later on. Children typically lose their last baby tooth at around age 12, so those teeth stick around a lot longer than many people realize!
You should start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as you can see them. You should use toothpaste with fluoride in it from the very beginning, but start with an amount of toothpaste the size of a grain of rice, because that is a safe amount for your child to swallow twice a day. Once your child can spit the toothpaste out reliably, you can use an amount of toothpaste the size of a pea.
You should make an appointment for your child once they have two teeth or are one year old, whichever comes first.
